Yesterday I had a great day helping with SCMES Bonfire Night special.

We had around 600 visitors to come for rides on the trains and to see the fireworks and bonfire.

Work started early for some members. I got down to Balleny Green, the home of Little Hay Miniature Railway (SCMES) at about 1pm and spent the next couple of hours helping prepare rakes of carriages and coupling them to locos.

We had a special visitor – The Baron – a splendid O&K.

Alongside The Baron, we had a steam double headed train and two petrol hydraulics working on the 7.25 ground level and another steam double headed train with a class 66 “pusher” on the raised 5″ circuit.

The gates opened at 6pm for our guests and there was soon a great deal of activity. The photos below show some of the action from my track marshalling position.

The fire was lit at 6.30 followed by a paused in train running for fireworks. It is always difficult to capture the full effect of fireworks but I have had a go. It really was an excellent display.

After the fireworks there was more train fun until services stopped at 9pm. All in all a great evening and we had managed to put all the carriages back in the sheds by about 10pm.

The whole evening was very professionally run and a great testament to what well-organised volunteers can pull off.
