Building Molly Ann

An adventure in model engineering by a complete beginner

Hi, I am Richard Petley and I should make it clear from the outset that I am not a practical person. Think of Uncle Podger from Three Men in a Boat and you have me. For those of you who haven’t read it or can’t remember it the passage in question about hanging a picture can be found here Jerome K Jerome – Three Men in a Boat

I am a middle-aged (50) technology consultant, keen sailor, dinghy instructor and cyclist and now an emerging model engineer.

In the past I have built a model aircraft (with IC engine) from a kit which I gave away and a model 1m scale yacht. I wouldn’t hold out either as being entirely my own work. A work colleague who has rebuilt a Mini 1275GT took pity on me with the yacht!

I don’t have a dedicated workshop – I have a garage with a workbench. In terms of tools, I have basic hand tools, a power drill, a Dremel and that is about it. In the winter I might be allowed to work indoors.

Building a live steam model locomotive will be a challenge. I will have to learn new skills and learn to be patient.

It will be interesting to see how I develop as I build Molly Ann.
